Will apps that are no longer supported that use the old maps cease to work? That would be a real bummer.

I don't see that happening. The API for the "mapkit" in iOS is not going away in iOS 6 so maps will work the same way. The only question is what will the "map" look like in iOS 6? Will it still be Google, or Apple's.

I thought it has already been made clear that the default map app in iOS 6 is Apple's.

I found that my iPad1 wasn't as stable on iOS 5, or at least I had problems with a lot of apps crashing. But since I switched to an iPad2 things have been much more stable. I am wondering if it is the case of older hardware not running so well on a newer OS?

I dunno, mine is a current gen iPod touch, the little woman has same issues with her iPhone 4
iOS 5 has just been brutal in terms of stability, especially with the native apps. 3rd party seems fine, but it's safari, the keyboard(software) and email that seem to crash a lot for us mine is not jailbroken, tho her's is |

Did you update your iPad 2 using the built in iOS update mechanism, or using iTunes?

iPhone 4s updating now, it took 1 hour to download via itunes (912.8MB, but slow internet here). Just realized that I didn't reboot my PC after the itunes update yesterday, oops. Looking forward to the email and phone updates that I felt were lacking and the new map features.

Not touching this until Apple's servers stop getting hammered and any widespread issues are dealt with. Learned my lesson during a previous OS upgrade when the last step kept failing because it couldn't connect with Apple's overwhelmed servers.

@ audacity - I was planning on updating via the iPad itself. Do you recommend otherwise?

Good News, I restored and updated and everything is now working. Looking forward to checking it out tonight when I'm at my daughters baseball practice.
FYI, I updated via iTunes.

@ jasonreg - I upgraded my iPad 2 and iPad 3 using the via the iPad itself (i.e. not using iTunes) and they both upgraded just fine.
I don't have a recommendation for you; I can only tell you what worked for me. |
