TSN990 Montreal to become RDS990 (690)

Actually there is a FOX Sports Radio network as well as ESPN in the USA.
XM has individual dedicated channels for NHL, MLB, NFL, Nascar, Fastasy League, College Sports and PGA.
Just like there are many (8?) news networks available on TV, there can always be room for niche programming on radio, especially if one company can own a cluster of stations and sell advertising with package pricing.

TSN 990 IS CKGM. I'm not sure what your question is?

CKGM will move from 990 to 690 as TSN, and then, if the CRTC approves Bell's application, flip it to french language sports radio RDS 690. A new specialty format French language station will take over the 990 spot.

There are currently only two English commercial stations in Montreal, CJAD and CKGM. There will be a new English language Talk radio station firing up on 600 in the near future. If CKGM flips to French, that still leaves only two English-language AM commercial stations.

Ok you guys you're quite right. It did occur to me later that FOX Sports is out there.

To TVLurker, what I meant to say and what I should have written was that the Montreal AM Landscape APPEARS to have three English-speaking commercial stations. I submitted this comment only because, again for the time being, 690 and 990 are broadcasting two different live programming, not mirroring.

I know that the RDS application was supposed to be in French but testing isn't in French. The batch of commentators must not be ready for the task at hand!!! Anyhow, I'd be curious to know what power 690 is broadcasting with, I doubt its 50 kW, at the very least, there's no spurr on adjascent channels like was the case with CINF so that's pretty good.

I'm eager to hear how 690 can be received down the Gaspe coast when I travel down there. Skywave AM reception is a lot of fun down there.

Not only is Fox Sports Radio and ESPN Radio out there, now Comcast is launching NBC Sports Radio on Tuesday. As is CBS with CBS Sports Radio come the new year...

While still broadcasting in English, Bell Media Sports “TSN 990” CKGM Montreal will make the move to 690 on Tuesday, September 4.

The CRTC approved the move of CKGM from 990 to 690 in November 2011. The move upgrades the station from a highly directional 50kw signal to non-directional formerly clear channel (not the company) 690. The 690 frequency was last home to French News “Info 690” prior to that station going dark in January 2010.

The move of CKGM to 690 will pave the way for Evanov to begin preparations to launch its replacement signal on 990. The station is planned to air French language programming directed at Montreal’s Gay and Lesbian community as “Radio Fierte“.

CKGM has a pending application with the CRTC to flip from English Sports to French Sports “RDS 690” in order to enable Bell Media to keep the station following the closure of its merger with Astral Media.

Looks as if they will start with TSN and then eventually flip to RDS...

The CRTC has not even held the hearing yet into the TSN/RDS flip, let alone made a decision. The testing on 690 is for CKGM as an English station. For now.
