Edit by 57: Does the PVR not report % space properly? Many people have reported the % space doesn't seem correct (internal and/or external), especially if there is not a lot of space used. Record at least 10 hours of HD and then see the percentages - they should then be fine.

Same here.

I have a Pioneer Kuro Elite, and with this new PVR, I have found that I need to make sure that the TV is turned on at least 3 seconds before I turn on the PVR.
If I don't, then I get a black screen. Hitting guide or whatever will display onscreen, but until you tune to a specific channel, you won't get any output.

We've had our 8642 for a few months now and the only consistent problems we've had are signal dropout (goes completely blank for a moment) and macro blocking when fast forwarding.

These problems are annoying, but not so annoying that I've done anything about them yet. I haven't tested my signal strength since I picked up the new box but last time I checked it with the old 8300 the signal strength was within limits. I assume I should test the strength and then if it's fine is it worth calling Rogers?

Thanks in advance

Can anyone report on what might be the most important issue for me in a PVR: Is there any way to get the recordings off the PVR?! Is there still firewire functionality, and if so, is there any sign of improvement with the constant skipping/locking when doing so? Is there any other way to get stuff off of the new pvr?

Thanks

I had the black screen too on 8642. But as Fod figured, I also found, when I paid attention, that the channel was 950 when it happened. So maybe it indeed is the cause.

I upgraded 160G hd to 1T of the same series. I didn't do enough test on 160G. But there is no macro block issue when FF and REW on 1T.

Your post was moved to this existing thread. The issue of the black screen is discussed in this thread. It's often because people leave the PVR on channel 950 after viewing a recording. To avoid this, go into the settings (press settings button twice) and set a "startup channel" (Viewer: Power On) - say something like CP24 and the PVR will always start on that channel at startup - no black screen. Do not use the "last channel" option.

If that doesn't fix it, here's the FAQ on HDMI Issues:

Did your 8642 PVR reboot in the last couple of days?

Earlier this week, I noted that my 8642 had rebooted. I didn't have a power outage of any sort so I can only conclude that either Rogers did it or the box did it on it's own for whatever reason.

Assuming it's the former, any clues as to why?

Rogers installed the 8642 PVR yesterday. At first glance the HD video quality is pretty good although not as great as Bell. One issue that I noticed is that on some channels like the ABCs (SD and HD), NBCs (SD and HD), History HD etc. the audio and video are not in sync. Almost 1/2 second difference. Enough to be quickly noticeable and annoying. I called Rogers and even had a tech come in today. He said the signal strength is fine and the box seemed fine too. He also noticed the glitch. The SD box is fine BTW. I tried to exchange the PVR on the recommendation of the tech but my local Rogers store only exchanges with a new unit if the box was bought at their location. Bummer. Now before I call Rogers again has anyone noticed any sync issue. I have also tried with a component cable and the result was the same. Any recommendations?

Lip sync issues are usually cured by a box reboot. Pull the power cord, wait 10 seconds then reconnectI. f you have tried that and the sync error remains it's time to swap the box.

You can go into the diagnostics for the HDD information and it's displayed there. Somewhere around page 30.

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=17719

Also, if you record 1 hour of HD and it takes 3-5% of the drive, it's a 160, if it takes 1% it's a 500.

Please use one of the 8642 threads, as this is a deals thread. Any future non-deals posts will be deleted.

Well things are getting worse with my box. Now I lost audio on Speed HD, Golf HD is a mess and Leafs TV is jittery. I called Rogers again and this time the the tech noticed issues with the signal, e.g. dropped audio blocks. Another visit from a tech is scheduled for tomorrow. I will keep my fingers crossed.
