Reading a lot of negative talk about Shaw. Anyone got anything positive to say? We're just about to sign up with them as we have limited options on Hamilton Mountain...

I've had a few issues and complaints but in the end I have no major issues with Shaw. I do hate their billing practices with a passion! (Ok, so 1 major issue.) The rest is minor annoyances with services, picture quality and the like.

Thankfully most issues I have had have come with compensation of some sort. I've had erroneous late charges removed. (Due to that aforementioned billing hatred/confusion. I was given the wrong amount to pay.) I've been credited for my internet being 1/5 of what it was supposed to be for a week. (Because a tech removed the MoCa filter.) Lastly I was compensated for having to return to the Shaw office because they couldn't afford to buy back my Extender first thing in the morning. (Their floats are about the same as the cost.) I was given 2 free por..... VOD movies. (2 at a value of $11.99 each, thus the "porn foolery". That's what VOD porn costs. *poop eating grin*)

They do have an expiry date, which leads me to wonder if my 2 free movies for signing with the "Shaw Friends" program are still valid. That was months ago and I have not used VOD at all since.

Anyway, the gist of my post is, they are by no means perfect, but I'd hate to be without them. (It would take a lot for me to go back to Telus. It's been over a decade.) They play games like any other profit based company. It sucks, but if you "want to play, you have to pay" these days. I'd rather "play" with Shaw than Telus at this stage.

It just says "valid student ID", so any student with a student ID?

My experience with Shaw has been mostly positive. Their Internet speeds are great with fair prices, cheap long distance charges, and I got hold of DCX3200 free rental when Shaw had that deal to get people to switch to Personal TV.

My only complaints are related to the cost and non-stop increases in the monthly fees.

I find the service to be great. I like that there's a best of hd option to only add in hd channels (I don't want SD). Shaw pretty much carries all the HD channels I want. Adding anymore would just increase my monthly bill. I feel they've got the meat and the bones right now. Anything extra would make it bloated like the old Tiers 1-3.

My Internet is awesome. It runs at 50/3 all the time.

No problems with my phone service either.

Concierge chat is great if I want to tweak my packages. Shaw's staff is knowledgeable and gets things done. I've never had any problems with shaws tech support that I did with telus.

I really like shaw. The only major drawback is they won't stop increasing the fees. Every 6 months it goes up. I keep cancelling channels/packages to compensate. Next up is to kill the landline.

I have had Shaw ever since I moved to Calgary in 2000. I have had minor issues with them, but nothing major. I have found their customer service top notch. I enjoy excellent HD reception and fast internet speeds. It has only been the last couple months that my internet speeds have dropped to about a half of what they should be on my BB100 plan. The tech that came to my house and confirmed the saturation in my area. I was told it would not be fixed until my area is upgraded. Which is fine with me as Shaw has given me a credit on my account because of the slower speeds.

If you have 2 services, sign up for Shaw Friends. Your chat wait times turn into a couple minutes
I particularly like that feature. I use it all the time now when I have to contact Shaw. Sure beats waiting on hold for 30+ minutes. I'll take the 2 min wait for the chat system any day.

That's a good one!

I like how Shaw lets me keep my number unlisted (for no extra charge) but I can still have it show up on call display (so people don't filter out my calls).

Telus went all the the way for unlisted (and they charge extra). I like how Shaw can hybrid the best of both worlds with it.

thanks for the replies guys...was a little skeptical when I was standing in their office and they were offering me packages and two minutes later saying the price had changed and they could no longer offer me those packages at that price...

heck, they are confusing for new customers...

I do have a few gripes with Shaw, but there are positive things to say about them as well. I find their service to be very reliable. I think my Internet connection only went down once in the past two years, same with the phone. My cable TV has always worked. I had an issue with not receiving Space channel in HD when it first came out, but they sent a tech out and fixed it in short order. I switched over to the Shaw Plan Personalizer just before the New Year and took HDNet as one of my channels. They discontinued carrying HDNet in March but continued to bill me for it through May. When I brought this to their attention, they credited my account for that channel for a month and a half plus also gave me an additional credit of $7.90 on top of that.

I'd have good things to say if they had some kind of upgrade offer to upgrade my cable box to a DCX-3400... I've been with shaw for 15 years +/- and with them adding channels that are MPEG4 now, it would be nice for them to offer a deal to us Shaw Friends members to upgrade our box so we can receive the newer channels they are adding without having to upgrade to the Gateway system...

I do have to echo the sentiments of Ggellert...I too am a long time Shaw customer, never in arrears, and subscribe to phone, cable TV and Internet. I'm even a member of Shaw friends. I bought a DCT3416I directly from Shaw in 2008 for $732 including GST. This box of course cannot do MPEG-4 and they are doing basically nothing to give me an upgrade path at a discount. They told me they would take my DCT3416 in trade for a second Gateway portal if I wanted to upgrade to the Gateway system. That really does me no good. Now I see that they have significantly jacked up the price of the hardware.

Maybe you could find someone in Edmonton who has, say, a DCX3400 that they want to trade for a Portal.

Buy their DCX3400 and pay for it with your DCT3416 and some cash, say the value of a Portal.

Then they can trade the DCT3416 for a Portal and keep the cash and you have converted your DCT3416 to a DCX3400 at a substantial discount.

The only wrinkle might be the warranty. I am not sure that the Shaw Friends warranty would apply to the DCX3400 after it was transferred to its new owner. I am still waiting for clarification on that one.
